Moving Connections: Scouting and Displaced People
In 2018, the Scouts Heritage Service received a National Lottery grant of £15,800 for Moving Connections: Scouting and Displaced People – focusing on promoting understanding of one of today’s biggest social issues, the current refugee crisis.
The Scouts have been working with the pioneering educational charity EmpathyLab and children aged 9 – 11 years from Kenilworth Primary School, Hertfordshire using objects from The Scouts vast Heritage Collection to learn about the Scouts’ fascinating heritage and develop their empathy skills.
The Scouts have a long history of supporting refugees and displaced people, in 1914 UK Scouts helped welcome Belgian refugees fleeing the First World War and supported children who fled Nazi persecution through the Kindertransport scheme. Find out more.
Scouts, skills and a century of change: the untold story of Gilwell Park
A 2019 exhibition which provided a background to the opening of Gilwell Park including the amazing growth of the Movement during its first 11 years and the devastation wrought by the First World War
The exhibition was hosted by Epping Forest District Museum in Waltham Abbey. Visitors explored 700 years of history of the Park which includes highwaymen, society scandal and Victorian inventors before the arrival of the Scouts in 1919.
It also highlighted Gilwell’s development and its important place in world Scouting. Objects included shoulder knots worn on the Brownsea Island camp and the kudu horn Baden-Powell sounded, to a 1919 Scout first aid kit (complete with surgical needle) as well as many other items which are usual kept in the Heritage Collection Store.
